BLOOMFIELD -- Clay City scored the first 10 points and never glanced back as the Lady Eels defeated host Bloomfield 56-42 in a Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference game Thursday night.

The Lady Eels pushed their record to 11-6 overall and remained on top of the SWIAC standings with a 6-0 mark. The Lady Cardinals dropped to 8-5, 4-2.

"We were a step slow from the beginning," said Bloomfield girls basketball coach Chris Hitchcock. "We could not match Clay City's intensity.

"They scored 10 points before we ever scored. Getting behind 14-2 at the end of the first quarter is not the way you want to begin a conference game."

Carmela Roeschlein paced the winners with a game-high 25 points. She hit two 3-pointers and made 11-of-12 free throws. Brielle Drelick added 16.

"We held Roeschlein to three points when we won by 10 up there last year," said Hitchcock. "But she was much more aggressive tonight.

"She hit a couple of outside shots, which were the key to her confidence. She was very determined to take the ball to the basket."

Led by Roeschlein, Clay City made 25-of-31 attempts at the foul line, compared to 10-of-16 for the hosts.

"You have to give them credit for attacking the basket and taking the ball to the rim," said Hitchcock. "Roeschlein was a handful for us.

"They got to the line and capitalized and we weren't able to do that. They outscored us by 15 points at the foul line."

Bloomfield was led by Emily Walker, who made two 3-pointers and finished with eight points. Alley Gilliland added six.

"We never got in the game," he said. "They did a good job of taking Alley out of the game. She never got to the line and that is a big part of her game."

Bloomfield also won the junior-varsity game.

The Lady Cards will play a make-up game at Springs Valley at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Clay City will host North Daviess Monday.
