CLAY CITY -- Despite a late rally, the Clay City boys' basketball team couldn't complete the comeback against the Sullivan Arrows and were defeated Friday night, 54-46.

The Eels started the game as poorly as they could have, quickly falling behind 14-1 before Clay City senior Josh Decker scored two of his five points by connecting on the Eel's first field goal of the game.

Clay City fought valiantly, but committed five turnovers in the first quarter, which benefited Sullivan to a 20-9 lead after the first quarter.

Clay City head coach Vance Edmondson was disappointed with his team's slow start, but remained optimistic about the future.

"We've got to string together four quarters," Edmondson said. "If we can ever do that as a ball club, I think we can make a nice little run."

In the second quarter, Clay City cut down on their mistakes, but couldn't stop the Arrows from scoring 17 points in the period, and fell on the scoreboard to 37-22 at halftime.

After halftime, the Eels got their defense on track, feeding off the crowd to outscore Sullivan 11-9 in the third quarter.

Leading the quarter for the Eels was Ben Denker, who scored five of his 15 points to aid his team's comeback attempt.

Junior Brylan Jones came off the bench Friday night and contributed with 11 points and four rebounds.

"(Jones) played well for us tonight," Edmondson said. "Came in, gave us some quality minutes, and got the big baskets for us He's a big boy who can shoot, and that's what we need out of him."

In the fourth quarter, the Eels were able to get Sullivan's lead down to eight points, but ran out of time before their valiant comeback as finished.

Senior Tyler Bridgewater scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds. Junior Jake Tiefel added to the team's total with three points of his own. Finally, Junior Tyler Allen finished the game with a point.

Clay City's next contest is Jan. 28, at North Daviess, at 8 p.m.
