UPDATE: School bus, vehicle collide

Monday, January 24, 2011

BOWLING GREEN -- On Monday, a Clay Community School Corporation bus and another vehicle were involved in a collision at County Road 550 East and County Road 100 South near Bowling Green.

According to information provided by the Clay County Sheriff's Department, the accident took place at approximately 7:46 a.m.

According to officials, the driver of a passenger vehicle -- a minor -- was heading northbound on CR 550 E, when she observed the bus approaching. Officials stated the driver slid approximately 50 yards into the front of the bus, causing the collision.

The driver of the passenger vehicle was taken by ambulance for non-life threatening injuries. Clay County Sheriff Mike Heaton told The Brazil Times earlier Monday the drive may have suffered a broken foot.

The school bus driver and 21 students were transferred to a new bus after reporting no injuries.

As per school policy, upon arriving at school, nurses performed preliminary examinations on all students to verify no injuries and parents were notified.

I hope everyone recovers as rapidly as possible. I know the minor driver learned that the road can be slicker than it appears. At least, no one was more seriously injured and everyone should be reminded to slow down when driving in the winter.
