Valiant effort falls short for Northview girls

Although they put up a valiant effort, the Northview girls' basketball team was beaten Friday by the Sullivan Golden Arrows in a 57-35 decision.

Just one short minute into the game, Sullivan had taken a six-point lead thanks to senior Joscelyne Mann connecting on a pair of three-pointers, forcing Northview head coach Scott Buell to use an early timeout.

The Knights were able to slow the bleeding and were lucky to be down nine, 18-9, after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Knights did their best to match the Arrows point-for-point by going 4-of-4 from the foul line, but were unable to score on open looks, connecting on just two of their eight field goal attempts. Northview went into halftime down, 29-17.

After a sluggish first half, Buell did his best to prepare his team for the second half.

"I challenged them at halftime to come out and play as hard as they possibly could, and we did that," Buell said. "We got it cut down to eight points and had two opportunities to cut it to six, and then we went on one of those scoring droughts we've had this year where we just can't make anything."

The Knights didn't score a point for a three-minute period of the third quarter, and Sullivan capitalized by extending their eight-point lead to a 14-point lead to end the third quarter at 41-27.

Leading scorer for the Knights was senior Chelsea Sampson, who scored 15 points and also led with six rebounds.

Northview fought hard in the final period, but it was clear that the Knights wouldn't be able to make the comeback.

Sophomore Taylor Carter scored seven points in the game. Senior Lauren Webster contributed to her team's total with nine points. Sophomore Ashley Hughes and Freshman Natasha Barrett each scored two points in the loss.

The Lady Knights' next challenge is Feb. 1 against Plainfield High School, at 7:30 p.m.
