He was born June 29, 1929, in Clay City, the son of Floyd E. and Phoebe Jane (Edmondson) Mitchell.
Galen worked for Commercial Solvents, Terre Haute, retiring in 1990.
Galen enjoyed spending time fishing and hunting as well as spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He married Ruby Westfall in 1948. She survives.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He leaves behind his wife of 62 years, sons Jack Mitchell and wife Joanie, Bill Mitchell and wife Phyllis and Bob Mitchell and wife Verna, 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, brother Ivan Dale Mitchell, sister Patricia Edwards, brother-in-law Paul Westfall, as well as several nieces, nephews, friends and extended family members.
Services will be at 1 p.m., at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, Clay City, Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011, with Pastor Rick Parsons officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the funeral home Tuesday, from 4-8 p.m.
