Northview to host IHSCGA event

Thursday, February 17, 2011

Ruth Ann Medworth
For several years, the Northview High School Winter Guard program has had the opportunity to host a sanctioned contest through the Indiana High School Color Guard Association.

On Saturday, the school will be filled to the rafters with color guards and fans.

"We've been lucky enough (to host)," NHS Guard Instructor Ruth Ann Medworth told The Brazil Times. "You have to apply to host a contest, and the association decides who gets them."

Saturday's contest will feature guards from approximately 45 schools across the state. There are six classifications of competition, including Regional A, Class AA, Cadet Class, Class A, Open Class and World Class.

Northview's guard competes in World Class and will be the only World Class group at the event Saturday.

In addition, North Clay Middle School will compete in Cadet Class and Clay City competes in Regional A.

Clay City is scheduled for competition at 11:08 a.m., while North Clay will compete at 5:54 p.m. Northview will compete at 8:53 p.m.

So far this season, Northview's guard has competed in two contests.

On Jan. 29, the Knights scored a 70.2, placing second at Danville. Avon won the competition and Center Grove placed third.

Last week, the Knights scored a 75.90, placing first. Center Grove came in second with a score of 73.80.

With so few Indiana guard groups competing in World Class, score totals are more important than placings, according to Medworth.

"We kind of have to live on scores and not the placings," she said.

Medworth said this year, Northview's performance is approximately six minutes in length and includes several musical pieces.

There are 15 students in the group this year, Medworth said.

"(The number) varies from year to year," she said. "It's a pretty big commitment."

North Clay's Corp competes in the Cadet Class, which Medworth said is essentially an exhibition class.

"It's set up so that it's a learning experience," she said. "You get them on the floor and they have fun at the same time."

Schools competing in Cadet Class receive placings only and scoring is based on a rating system of either Gold, Silver or Bronze.
