The following is a list of upcoming events provided to The Brazil Times:

Cookie Contest

The Brazil Times American Cancer Society's 2011 Clay County Relay For Life Team, the "Clark Kent Super Group," is sponsoring Clay County's best Peanut Butter Cookie Contest Monday, Feb. 28.

Entries may be brought to The Times' office between 1-2 p.m., with judging to begin at 2 p.m.

Entry fees will be $5 for Clay County residents and $10 for businesses in the county. All proceeds will be used to support Relay For Life.

The winning entry will receive $25, a three-month subscription to the newspaper, their picture in the paper and bragging rights.

Calendar Change

The Clay Community School Corporation recently revised its 2010-11 school calendar.

Due to the ice storm, which wreaked havoc in the area earlier this month, changes were made.

The teacher in-service day, originally scheduled for Friday, April 15, has been moved to Monday, June 6.

School will be in session April 15.

If the corporation has additional cancellations, it is anticipated the days will be added to the end of the school year.

Classes Available

The Clay County Health Department has available free smoking cessation counseling and smoking cessation products.

Meetings Set

The Clay County Redevelopment Commission will conduct its monthly meeting on the third Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m., at the Clay County Commissioner's Courtroom.

The public is invited to attend.

Diabetes Classes

The Brazil Senior Citizens Center and the Clay County Health Department have teamed together to offer diabetes education classes at the center.

The meetings will take place on the first Friday of the month at noon.


The Clay County Historical Society has closed the doors of the museum for the winter months.

The museum will re-open March 14.

There will be no membership meeting until March 7, 2011.

Euchre Anyone?

The Staunton Tuesday Euchre Group will begin games again soon.

The group plans to reconvene for games at the Staunton Community Center Tuesday.

All games begin at 12:45 p.m. All are open to the public and beginners are welcome.

Meeting Set

The Harmony Town Council will conduct a meeting at 7 p.m., Tuesday, at the Harmony Community Center.

The rescheduled meeting will take place in conjunction with the intent to inform the public of pursuing a grant to help erect a tornado warning system at the community center.

Benefit Supper

A benefit chili supper has been scheduled for area resident Rick Neier.

The event is sponsored by family and friends of Neier. All proceeds from the event will go to help with medical expenses he has incurred due to a stroke.

The fundraiser will take place at the Riddell National Bank downtown location Saturday, from 3-6 p.m.

Chili, hot dogs, peanut butter sandwiches, drinks and desserts will be offered.

Freewill offerings will be accepted.

Neier will be in attendance.

Hoops for Hope

On March 7, the "Hoops for Hope" charity basketball game will take place at Northview High School. The Northview Staff takes on the North Clay Staff at 7:30 p.m.

There will be half-time entertainment by and "oldster" hoops band, guard girls and cheerleading squads and some well-known local celebrities will be the referees.

The proceeds will be used to support the upcoming 2011 Clay County American Cancer Society's Relay For Life event.

Commemorative T-shirts are also on sale ($11 each, with larger sizes $12) at the main offices of both Northview and North Clay Middle School, any member from Northview Key Club or at Riddell National Bank and The Brazil Times until March 1. Wearing a "really cool shirt" will get a person into the event for a $1, while all others will be charged $5 at the door.

'Once Upon A Mattress'

The Community Theatre of Clay County's next performance, "Once Upon A Mattress," has been scheduled for March 10-12.

The musical is based on the story of "The Princess and The Pea," written by Hans Christian Andersen.

Single dinner theatre tickets cost $25, which includes a buffet dinner and show. Tickets may be purchased by calling 442-6909.

Reservations are required for all performances.


House of Hope, a Division of Mission Teens, Inc., will host an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast Saturday, March 12.

The event will take place at the YMCA of Clay County, 225 E. Kruzan St., Brazil, and will run from 8 a.m.-noon.

A $5 donation will cover each person served.

All proceeds will go toward expenses associated with building renovations.

Job Fair

Ivy Tech Community College will host its annual Job Fair from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Thursday, March 24.

Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. All are encouraged to attend.

Food Drive

The Church of Our Lord Jesus, 708 E. Hendrix St., Brazil, did not conduct a food drive in February.

The next drive has been scheduled for 1-3 p.m., Saturday, March 26, at the church.

Crop For Cornerstone

Crop for Cornerstone -- a scrapbooking fundraising event -- is coming May 7.

The event will take place at Cornerstone Christian Academy.
