The mission of the Essence of Red is to provide heart health education to the Wabash Valley. The Essence of Red will be sponsoring the following American Red Cross courses:
* Friday, March 11, the American Red Cross will offer a free Citizen CPR class from 1-1:30 p.m., at the Booker T. Washington Center, 1101 S. 13th St., Terre Haute. The purpose of the course is to teach untrained bystanders how to perform hands-only CPR,
* Tuesday, March 22, the American Red Cross will offer a free Adult and Child CPR class from 5:30-9:30 p.m., at the American Red Cross building, 700 S. 3rd St., Terre Haute. Participants will learn how to respond to cardiac and breathing emergencies, and
* Friday, April 22, the American Red Cross will offer a free Your Heart Matters class from 1-2 p.m., at the Booker T. Washington Center. The course teaches how to identify risk factors for coronary disease, how to recognize signals of a heart attack, and how to develop a wellness plan to reduce the risk of heart disease.
"A recent Red Cross survey showed that one in four people have been in a situation where someone needed CPR," Wabash Valley chapter of the American Red Cross Preparedness, Health and Safety Director Kellie Farnsworth said. "Through the sponsorship of the Essence of Red, we are able to create a safer community by teaching more citizens the lifesaving skills needed to respond to cardiac emergencies."

The Wabash Valley chapter of the American Red Cross serves Clay, Greene, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo counties in Indiana, and Edgar County in Illinois.
