Knights soar at Greencastle Indoor Meet

GREENCASTLE -- Northview wrapped up the indoor portion of its track and field season by competing at the Greencastle Indoor Meet held at DePauw University on Tuesday night. The Knights competed as part of an eight-team field and were led by several top performances.

The Northview boys' team placed second to Brownsburg with 82 points to the Bulldogs' winning tally of 112. Mooresville was a close third with 77.5 points, just ahead of Indianapolis McCutcheon's 73. Greencastle was fourth ahead of Greenwood, North Putnam and Avon.

Joel Whittington was perhaps the meet's top performer as he took the top spot in three different sprinting events.

Whittington raced home to take the top spot in the 200 meters with a time of 23.58, cruising to victory by more than a half second over Mooresville's Michael Passmore (24.04). The Knights' senior was also the winner in the 400 meters with a time of 52.80 to best Passmore in that event as well.

Whittington also crossed the finish line first in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.14, dominating the rest of the field by a half second. Whittington, who has qualified for the Hoosier State Relays on March 19 in that event, topped Brownsburg's Jeremy Shuppard (8.64). The time is Whittington's best indoor time of the season.

Junior Patrick Durcholz placed second in the pole vault by clearing 11-6 and was fourth in the high jump with a height of 5-6 followed in fifth by Levi Pollard, who was also fourth in the long jump at 19-0 ½.

Freshman Nic Yocom claimed fifth-place in the 3,200 meters with a time of 10:43.35 and classmate Ian Heffner was eighth in the hurdles. Garrett McKenzie placed eighth in the 200 meters. Jordan VanHorn placed eighth in the shotput for the Knights with a heave of 39-7.

In the girls' meet, Northview placed sixth overall and was led by a runner-up finish from Annie Smiley in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.75 with Mooresville's Mandy Fisher taking the top spot in 9.35. Smiley was also second in the pole vault by clearing 8-6, which tied the height of Brownsburg's Elissa Hall, who had fewer misses to claim the victory.

Leeanna Knight placed third for Northview in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.79 as Greenwood's Kailey Evans won in 7.63. Knight was also the third-place finisher in the long jump behind Evans' victory. Knight had a leap of 15-0 ½ as Evans won with a distance of 16-4.

In the shotput, Alexus Bex places sixth with a throw of 30-2 ½.
