The following is a list of upcoming events provided to The Brazil Times:

Flower Removal

Officials with Calcutta Cemetery are asking that all old flowers and decorations be removed from gravesites before April 15.

Classes Available

The Clay County Health Department has available free smoking cessation counseling and smoking cessation products.

Diabetes Classes

The Brazil Senior Citizens Center and the Clay County Health Department have teamed together to offer diabetes education classes at the center.

The meetings will take place on the first Friday of the month at noon.

Heavy Trash

The City of Brazil's Sanitation Department will conduct heavy trash pickup on the following Fridays in April, based on normal trash pickup schedule:

* Friday -- Monday's trash route,

* Friday, April 8 -- Tuesday's trash route,

* Friday, April 15 -- Wednesday's trash route, and

* Friday, April 29 -- Thursday's trash route.

Heavy trash pickup must be reserved and may be done by calling City Hall at 443-2221 or the Brazil City Street Department at 448-8501.


Coach's Timeout Sports Bar will host "Timeout for Comedy," Friday.

The show, which starts at 9 p.m., will feature four comedians. Based on space and the amount of tickets sold, the event will take place at Traditions.

Tickets are $5 in advance or $7 at the door.

Celebration Dinner

The 50th John L. Lewis Day Celebration Dinner will take place Friday.

The event will take place at 11 a.m. (Central Standard Time) at the Oakland City American Legion, 211 E. Washington St., Oakland City, Ind.

All retired miners and their spouses as well as widows and widowers of retired miners are welcome to attend.

Meeting Moved

The Center Point Town Council has moved its April meeting.

Due to scheduling conflicts, the meeting will take place at 9 a.m., Saturday, at town hall.

All are welcome to attend.


The 2011 Clay County American Cancer Society Relay For Life "Team Pappy's" has one remaining fundraiser.

The team captain is Kathy Bell.

On Saturday, the team will conduct a Relay For Life scrapbooking crop event from 9 a.m.-9 p.m., at Traditions, 105 E. National Ave., Brazil.

Cost is $10 per person, with door prizes, make and takes and games available.

All proceeds will be used to support Relay For Life.

Snacks, drinks and a sandwich will be available for lunch with pizza possibly being made available for supper.

Frugal Friends

Frugal Friends -- Coupon Savers -- will meet at the Brazil Public Library at 11 a.m., Monday, by the fireplace.

Those interested in attending will learn how to hunt, swap and shop for favorite items and are invited to bring unwanted coupons to trade.

Open Hands Preschool, 201 N. Meridian St., Brazil, will conduct an open house for preschool children and parents from 6-7 p.m., Monday.

Historical Meeting

The Clay County Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m., Monday, in the lower level of the museum.

The guest speaker will be Jerry Laue, St. Vincent Clay Hospital Administrator.

The topic will be, "A Snapshot of the History of Health Care in Clay County."

The public is invited to attend.

Meeting Set

The Clay Community Schools Central Curriculum Committee will meet Tuesday, at 6:30 p.m., in the North Clay Middle School Media Center.

Agenda items include reviews and voting on the new high school course proposal and adoption of the new K-12 science and health textbooks.

Diabetes Classes

St. Vincent Clay Hospital's next class on Diabetes Education, "What You Should Know About Type 2 Diabetes," will take place from 6-7 p.m., Wednesday.

Lincoln Day Dinner

The Clay County Republican Club will conduct its annual Lincoln Day Dinner Friday, April 8, at The Renaissance, 101 W. National Ave., Brazil.

Gathering time will begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30.

The keynote speaker for the event will be U.S. Congressman for the 8th District Larry Bucshon.

Jefferson-Jackson Dinner

The Clay County Democrat Club has scheduled its annual Jefferson-Jackson Dinner for Friday, April 8, at Traditions, 105 E. National Ave., Brazil.

Dinner will take place at 6 p.m.

The featured speaker will be John Gregg, former Democratic State Representative.
