Knights finish strong in softball opener

MARTINSVILLE -- The Northview softball team kicked off the season in strong fashion, overcoming a one-run deficit through four innings to score a 7-1 victory against Martinsville on the road Tuesday evening.

The Artesians broke a scoreless tie with their lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning before the Knights tied the score in their half of the fifth frame. Northview then broke the game open with a five-run outburst in the seventh inning to gain the win.

Taylor Carter got the victory for the Knights, allowing just three hits while striking out 12 Martinsville batters. Carter walked two in the win.

At the plate, Nicole Nelson had a big night with a double and two RBI as part of a 2-for-4 game. Senior Lauren Webster added two RBI while going 1-for-3 and Carter also went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Hope Torbert contributed two hits in four at-bats and Kylie McKee had a double for the Knights.

The junior varsity team dropped a 9-2 decision to the Artesians.

The Knights (1-0 overall) host Linton this evening at 5 p.m.
