Clay City linksters return experience

After placing tenth in last year's sectional with an 18-hole score of 373 at Owen Valley, the Clay City boys' golf team will look to improve in 2011 after only losing one key player.

Nick Johnson is the only golfer from last year's sectional not returning for the Eels' 2011 season.

Luckily for Clay City, its leading scorer from the sectional, Darius Farmer, will return along with the 84 he scored at Rolling Meadows Golf Course in the sectional in 2010.

However, new head coach Josh Strain is looking for big things from the returning members, including lone senior Austin Sinders. "All the juniors and seniors played last year," Strain said. "They should be pretty well equipped, improving their game this year, picking up where they left off last year."

Sinders scored a 102 at Owen Valley in 2010.

At last season's SWIAC tournament, the Eels placed third out of eight teams with a 364. All members played well, with no player scoring more than 100 in Linton.

Farmer scored a team-best 87, Rhodes was second with an 88 and third was Colton Dyer, scoring 95.

This season's golf squad boasts one freshman, two sophomores, seven juniors and just one senior.

Strain has great things in store for the younger players on the team. "I'm hoping to get them in a few (matches)," Strain said. "So that they'll get some experience for next year."

Earlier on last season, Clay City placed second in the Tri-River Conference Meet at Phil Harris golf course. Sinders and Farmer made the Second Team All-Conference squad for their games. Farmer scored 86 and Sinders shot an 89 at the TRC. Rounding out the order was Rhodes with a 98, Dyer with a 102 and Rhett Bigger shot a 103.

Strain is looking forward to this Saturday's Northview Invitational for his squad. "I'm hoping that we do pretty well," Strain said. "Finish probably in the mid-pack. We should do alright."

Strain also has big hopes for the upcoming season. "I'm just hoping we get better over the season," Strain said. "We should be able to finish over .500, which is our goal."

The juniors on the team are Rhodes, Dyer, Farmer, Nathan Buell, Jordan Tooloose, Levi Lynch and H.C. Man. Sophomores are Bigger and Austin Schlegle. The only freshman is Bailey Smith.
