Howard Holland 'Bill' Berry

Howard Holland "Bill" Berry, 93, Brazil, died April 10, 2011, at Cloverleaf Healthcare Facility following an extended illness.

He was born Nov. 2, 1917, in Terre Haute, the son of Chauncey Christian Berry and Loula Holland Berry.

He graduated from Wiley High School class of 1935.

Bill later attended Purdue University.

In June 1941, Bill was united in marriage to Edna Marie Russell Berry. She preceded him in death in November 1978.

As a young man, he was a part of the Civilian Air Corp.

He and Edna were in California 1941-45. Bill served as an airplane inspector during World War II in San Diego.

In 1948, Bill began construction of "It's the Berry's" Motel on United States 40. He owned and operated the motel from 1948-68. From 1968-78, it was renovated as apartments and Bill operated the business until his retirement in 1979.

On Jan. 2, 1981, Bill married Margaret "Peggy" Martin Berry.

Their first year of marriage was spent traveling the United States, and exploring many National Parks and campgrounds, as well as cities and landmarks, and traveling in Bill's 32-foot camper. They visited 49 of 50 states.

Bill has been quite a man of many interests, including such talents as stone mason, painter and artist, jewelry maker and silver craftsman, rock collector, a pilot, fisherman, hunter and extensive traveler. He had a great love for the outdoors and when traveling, he would often choose camping.

Bill served his community and had several memberships in his lifetime, including the Exchange Club, Scottish Rite, Valley of Terre Haute, Brazil Elks, and the Toastmaster's Club. He was most proud of his affiliation with the Boy Scouts of America and his having attained the level of Silver Beaver.
