Under nearly perfect weather conditions at Forest Park Golf Course, the Terre Haute South Braves came away with a 14-stroke win in a dual match against the home standing Northview Knights on Wednesday evening.
While the skies may have been sunny and the wind still for the first time during match action for both squads, Northview coach Scott Buell wasn't overly pleased with his team's score of 165 against the Braves' nine-hole tally of 151.
"It was really nice weather tonight. I think this is the first time all year that the wind hasn't been blowing 30 miles per hour. Temperatures were warm. Honestly, for both schools, I thought the scores would be a lot lower than they were tonight," Buell said. "We've got a lot of work to do, no doubt about it. I'm disappointed in that score, we're better than that. We've got to get some things worked out. It's early though. Hopefully we can come back (tonight) and get a little fire in us and post a good score."
Dayton University-bound golfer Thomas Goss was the low medalist in the match, leading the Braves with a round of 36. He was followed closely by teammates Shelby Stewart and Cory Gentz, who each shot a 38. Sam Harbaugh carded a 39, Jackson Jarvis shot a 40 and Eric Gentz tallied a 41 for South.
The Knights were led by a 41 apiece from Jacob Musgrave, Larry Knight and Dylan Nesty. Brad Smith shot a 42, Austen Bowen had a 44 and Alec Coughanowr finished off a round of 46.
"The greens are in outstanding shape," McDonald said. "(Terre Haute South coach) Chris (Cassell) was even mentioning that these are some of the best greens he's played on," Buell said. "It's causing some fits. There weren't many birdies by either team tonight, which was surprising. We've played this place enough that we should know by now what the greens are and what the breaks are."
The Knights will be back in action this evening on the same course against visiting Rockville. Buell pointed out that it could help his team to quickly get back on the course for competition.
The Braves also claimed the JV match by a 162 to 185 score. Drew Cahill was medalist for the Braves and Drew Atkinson led the Knights with a 41.
The Rox and Knights tee-off at approximately 4:30 p.m.
