Eels earn first baseball win; girl's track and field falls

CLAY CITY -- The Clay City Eels got their first baseball win of the season, which also doubled as a conference victory, dropping White River Valley 9-3 on Thursday evening.

The Eels jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning before the Wolverines tied the score in the third inning. Clay City broke the game open with an eight-run outburst in the fifth inning.

Brylan Jones earned the pitching victory with a complete game, two-hitter with 13 strikeouts for the Eels.

At the plate, Kole Smith pounded out a 4-for-4 game with a double and Jones added a 2-for-4 game with two RBI. Zack Boggs contributed a 2-for-4 performance and Wyatt Gard added a two-run double.

Clay City (1-2 overall) plays today at North Daviess.

In the girl's meet, West Vigo cruised to a comfortable team win by an 87 to 36 score.

Clay City picked up their main points in the throwing events, sweeping both events.

In the shotput, Breezy Wiley won with a distance of 28-5. The Eels' Asie Jeffers placed second followed by Mika Gerber. The Eels also swept the discus event with Jeffers winning with a throw of 83-6. Wiley placed second and Carli Milner took third.

Kayla Sinders raced to a win in the 400 meters with a time of 1:12.
