COVINGTON -- When the group The Friends of the Covington Circle Trail set out to organize a 5K run last year, members didn't know what to expect.
But the event attracted 187 runners and raised $2,700 for the expansion and maintenance of the paved track, which will form a six-mile loop around the town when completed.
"We were very pleased with the feedback we received from the participants last year," organizer Beth Mason said.
The second Covington 5K will take place June 4, and pre-registration for the race begins Thursday. Runners can register online at www.covington5k.com, or by paper registration, which is available at Covington IGA, Covington High School and all Fountain Trust Co. locations.
The pre-registration fee is $18, which includes a T-shirt. Runners can register until the day of the event.
However, after May 27, the fee will be $20 and the T-shirts will not be guaranteed. Registrations the day of the race must be paid in cash.
"We're hoping for more than 200 people this year, and 250 would be awesome," Mason said.
Medals will be awarded to the top three in the Women's Division and Men's Division, and to the top male and female in each 10-year age bracket. Like last year, the race will be followed by a free fun run for children.
"Our overall mission is still to promote a healthy community and raise awareness of the Circle Trail," another event organizer Raquel Stultz said.
Stultz added the organizers are looking for sponsors to cover expenses associated with the runs as well as volunteers who can help on race day.
