Clay County Veterans Group Vietnam War Memorial recently accepted a check for $1,000 from the Utilities District of Western Indiana REMC Community Fund at the cooperative's annual meeting, which took place April 9.

The UDWI REMC Community Fund was created by the REMC Board of Directors to help strengthen communities.

Each month, as part of the program, participating members allow their electric bills to be rounded up to the next whole dollar. For example, if a member's bill is $116.57, it would be rounded up to $117, meaning each contributing member pays less than $12 annually per meter.

The spare change collected through the "rounding up" process amounts to thousands of dollars per month and the money is put into a community fund. Local not-for-profit agencies are encouraged to apply for grants distributed on a quarterly basis.
