Youth Orchestra celebrating 50 years

Wednesday, April 27, 2011

TERRE HAUTE -- The Crossroads of America Youth Orchestra is inviting the community to help celebrate its 50 years of training and encouraging young musicians by attending the orchestra's spring concert Sunday, at 4 p.m.

Joining them for the performance at the Scottish Rite Cathedral will be the Musical Arts Youth Orchestra of Bloomington, Ind.

The concert, which is free and open to the public, will feature selections by Beethoven, Bizet and others.

Composed of students from Terre Haute and the surrounding areas, the Crossroads of America Youth Orchestra provides youth in grades 6-12 the opportunity to perform classical music in a full orchestra setting.

Founded by the City of Terre Haute in 1961, it includes young string and band musicians from area middle and high schools.

The orchestra is currently under the direction of Roby George, Director of Bands at Indiana State University.
