Rev. John William Fischer Jr., 66, Center Point, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, April 26, 2011, with his family by his side.

He was born in Brazil, March 25, 1945, the son of John W. and Opal Irene (Campbell) Fischer.

John graduated from Bowling Green High School with the class of 1963. Following high school, he attended Asbury College in Wilmore, Ky. John married Ruth Bruce May 28, 1966. He enlisted in the United States Army and served in Vietnam before being honorably discharged in 1968. John had also attended Indiana State University and Garrett Evangelical Seminary.

Rev. Fischer began his career in the ministry in 1977, and was ordained in the United Methodist Church in 1979. He served several churches in the community until he retired in 2004. During his tenure he served Mt. Pleasant UMC, Rosedale UMC, Bridgeton UMC, Pimento UMC, Prairie Creek UMC, Cory UMC, Mt. Calvary UMC, and Peniel UMC. His most recent appointment was to the Prairie City congregation until his declining health forced him to resign in March of this year.

John had also worked at Columbia House, Terre Haute, as the Director of Canadian Systems for several years, retiring in 2000.

John was preceded in death by his parents, brother Alden McCullough and granddaughter Erica Fischer.

He is survived by his wife Ruth, three sons John W. Fischer III, Bruce A. Fischer (Stacie) and Brian F. Fischer, grandchildren and stepgrandchildren, to whom he was known as Papoo, Katharine Fischer, Sydney Fischer, Ashley Reach, Lauren Fischer, Emelia Fischer, Nadia Fischer, Kinsie Fischer, Jade Rounds and Chayson Rounds.

Services for Rev. Fischer will be at French Funeral Home, Saturday April 30, 2011, at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Center Point Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday, from 4-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Methodist Church General Board of Higher Education and Ministry, PO Box 340007, Nashville, Tenn., 37203.
