TERRE HAUTE -- Daily rainfall and nasty weather has kept the area soggy for nearly two weeks so it was only fitting that Wednesday's dual track meet between Northview and Terre Haute South took place under steady rains.

Though the pole vault and high jump weren't held due to the rain, the meet went on as scheduled with South edging out the Knights in both meets.

Despite the damp conditions, Northview boy's coach Chad Smith offered an honest assessment.

"Everybody had to run in the same climate," Smith quipped. "I don't know the final score right now, but I'm sure we didn't come out on the winning end. We had a good meet. I rested some people and did some different events because we have a conference meet with Sullivan (Thursday).

Following the Braves' 75 to 39 win over the Knights, Smith noted that his squad was gearing up for today's conference meet against the Arrows.

"In the scheme of things that's a little more important meet than tonight," Smith said. "South's a big meet to us and last year we had a chance to beat them at home and we did, but we're kind of focusing (on Thursday)."

Senior Joel Whittington narrowly missed the school record while winning the 400 meters, his first time running the event this season. He also claimed victory in the 100 meters (11.34) and 110 hurdles (14.8).

"The school record (in the 400 meters) is 50.1 and he ran 50.2. I don't know that he's going to be a 400 runner, but he's awfully good at that event," Smith said. "Maybe we'll have a shot at (the school record) tomorrow, but I don't know what the weather is going to be like (Thursday). I'm disappointed he didn't break the school record. He really wanted to do that tonight. It was pouring down rain when that 400 started. He's a heck of an athlete so I know he'll break it if he gets a chance to run it again."

Northview also had success in the field events as Ethan Stewart won the shotput (46-11 ) with Jordan Van Horn in second. Van Horn was the victor in the discus with a heave of 120-6.

Freshman Nic Yocom placed second in both distance events with a time of 10:34 in the 3,200 and 4:53 in the 1,600 event. Damon Hyatt placed third in the 800 meters (2:12.5) and Levi Pollard was third in the long jump with a leap of 18-7.

In the girl's meet, Terre Haute South was able to squeeze past the Knights, 69 to 54, but coach Ryand Tucker was happy with the results.

"It was nice to get (a meet) in, our sprinters had some good times tonight," Tucker said. "We're dropping time in just about all events except the distances because you can't really say anything about today. I don't really know about the shot and disc, but I'm sure they did the best they could. I was pleased with the results. They were about what I thought they would be, the way people placed."

Sprinting events were big for the Knights as Northview swept the 100 meters. Leeanna Knight won the event in a time of 13.08 ahead of Natasha Barrett and Andrea Schultz. Knight edged teammate Jessica Thacker in the 200 meters with a time of 27.92 and won the long jump ahead of Thacker in 15-7 . Andrea Schultz capped the sweep in the long jump.

Annie Smiley won the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.82 as Thacker placed third and was runner-up in the 300 hurdles.

In the field events, Kalyn Beil was the discus winner for the Knights with a throw of 81-5 as Alexus Bex placed second. The pair were second and third in the shotput.

Northview's 4x100 relay team of Thacker, Knight, Barrett and Smiley won with a time of 53.22.

The Knights are back in action against Sullivan tonight at home beginning at 5 p.m.
