The following is a list of upcoming events provided to The Brazil Times:

Notification

The City of Brazil is setting up an e-mail notification system for water-related happenings, such as boil orders.

To sign up for the notification, contact the Water Office at 448-1539, or e-mail brazilwater@brazil.in.gov.

Street Closings

Parts of Nabuca Drive, Bonnie Miller Drive, Center Street and one service road in Forst Park will be closed at 6 p.m., for about 30 minutes, on the following dates: May 16, 19, 23, 26, and June 2.

The closures will be to provide safety for the runners in the Subway/Rotary Healthy Kids 1-mile Fun Run practices.

The roads will be closed again on race day, June 4, at 11 a.m., for about 30 minutes.

Park motorists should be aware of some inconvenience and allow enough time to reroute around the closed roads.

Donations

Clay County Samaritan's Purse is currently in the process of accepting donations for those in need of items in the south after recent tornadoes affected the area.

Items are being collected through noon, Friday, and may be dropped off at the following locations:

* Lynn's Pharmacy, 22 W. National Ave., Brazil, or

* The Clay County Extension Office, located at the Clay County 4-H Fairgrounds on State Road 59.

Scholarship Notice

The Clay County Beef Cattle Association is seeking to promote youth involvement in the beef industry.

Any 2010-11 high school junior or senior, or college freshman, involved in the beef industry is encouraged to complete an application for a monetary scholarship.

Applications are available at the Clay County Extension Office, from Brenda Culler by calling 495-6471 or from Becky Butt at 864-2276.

Applications are due to Culler or Butt by June 1.

Tutoring Offered

The Clay County Literacy Coalition will conduct free private tutoring sessions at the Brazil Public Library for adults who wish to improve their reading skills or would like to learn to read.

Pamphlets are currently available at various locations around the city.

Those wishing to take part in the sessions are urged to return the pamphlet to the Clay County Literacy Coalition, 203 N. Walnut St., Brazil, Ind., 47834.

Choir members needed

A Brazil Community Children's Choir will be formed to perform at the July 4 celebration at Forest Park Monday, July 4, along with the Brazil Community Choir.

Children ages 9-12 are needed.

Food Orders

This week is Angel Food order week.

Someone will be at Eastside Christian Church Tuesday and Thursday evenings, from 4:30-6 p.m., to take orders.

Got Gold?

Jackson Township Elementary School is conducting a fundraiser Wednesday.

Those with unwanted gold and sterling silver may bring it to the school from 1:30-3 p.m., to receive cash.

Those interested should RSVP by calling the school at 812-986-2177.

Basket Bingo

Cheerleaders with Northview High School and North Clay Middle School will conduct a Longaberger Basket Bingo event Thursday, at Kennedy's Crossing Bingo Hall.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and Bingo begins at 6:30.

Cost is $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Extra cards will be available for $5. There will be two intermission games.

There will also be two raffles for items estimated at $190 and $179.

Bingo and raffle tickets are available from any cheerleader parents or by e-mailing medr@clay.k12.in.us.

Special Meeting

Students from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology will be the featured guests at the Clay County Breakfast Optimist Club meeting Saturday.

The meeting will begin at 8 a.m., and will take place at Sisters Coffee Bar, 123 E. National Ave., Brazil.

The students will present recent engineering projects accomplished throughout the school year.

All are invited to attend the meeting.

Golf Scramble

The first Frontier Communications Golf Scramble will take place Saturday, at the Forest Park Golf Course.

Entry fee is $65 per person. Lunch will take place at noon and tee time is set for 1 p.m.

The event has been set up as a fundraiser for the Clay County Youth League.

Yard Sale

House of Hope, a Division of Mission Teens, Inc., will host its Giant Yard Sale Saturday.

Platters will be served from noon-6 p.m. The platters will include hamburger, hot dogs and two sides. A $5 donation will cover each person served.

Shot Clinic

The Clay County Humane Society will conduct a pet shot clinic from 1-4 p.m., Saturday, at the Forest Park Pavilion.

All shots are $10 each.

Corn Hole Tournament

The Seelyville Volunteer Fire Department will conduct a Corn Hole Tournament fundraiser Sunday.

Registration will begin at 1 p.m.

Cost is $10 per person. The fire department is located at 2277 N. Main St., Seelyville.

All proceeds will go to the Hoosier Burn Camp.

Open House

Clay Community Schools will conduct open houses at the six renovated elementary school buildings Sunday.

There will be an opening session at Northview High School in the school auditorium at 1 p.m.

Following the session and continuing until 3:30 p.m., patrons will be allowed to tour the following renovated elementaries: Clay City, East Side, Forest Park, Meridian, Staunton and Van Buren.

Disaster Plans

Clay County Emergency Management Director Bryan Husband will be at the Brazil Public Library Wednesday, May 19, to discuss and help those attending prepare for disasters that may occur in the county.

The program is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., and is free and open to the public.

Dinner Time!

The Staunton Community Center will serve a chicken noodle dinner May 20.

Serving time is 4-7 p.m., or until food runs out.

Cost for the meal is $8 for adults and $5 for children.

The meal will include chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes, slaw, green beans, homemade yeast rolls and dessert.

All proceeds will go to the community center.

Dance!

The Silver Sneakers will sponsor a dance at the YMCA of Clay County, 225 E. Kruzan St., Brazil, Friday, May 20.

The event will begin at 6 p.m., and conclude at 9 p.m.

It is open to the public.

City Yard sale

The City of Linton will conduct a city-wide yard sale Saturday, May 21, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m., rain or shine.

Sale maps will only be available the day of the sale.

Zumba Fundraiser

The Seelyville Volunteer Fire Department will conduct a Zumba Class fundraiser Sunday, May 22.

The event will take place at the fire department, located at 2277 N. Main St., Seelyville.

Cost is $10 in advance or $15 at the door.

The event will run from 2-4 p.m.

All proceeds will go to the Hoosier Burn Camp.

Fun-Run

The Subway/Rotary Healthy Kids 1-mile Fun Run will take place Saturday, June 4, at 11 a.m., at the Forest Park Pavilion.

The event is for children ages 5-12. The first practice session is Thursday, May 5, at the pavilion, at 6 p.m. There will be eight practice sessions.

The Church of Our Lord Jesus, 708 E. Hendrix St., Brazil, will conduct a food giveaway Saturday, June 11, from 1-3 p.m.

Camper Rally

The third Southern Indiana Vintage Camper Rally will take place June 9-12, at Vigo County's Fowler Park and Pioneer Village.

The rally is open to all trailers 25 years and older regardless of make, model, type, size and condition.
