According to officials, Michael Giltz, 48, Brazil, was heading home from work. He was northbound on State Road 59 when he fell asleep and crossed the southbound lane. The vehicle he was driving, a 1994 Buick LeSabre, came to a rest after hitting a tree.
Officials said the bulk of the damage was on the passenger side of the vehicle. The vehicle was an estimated total loss.
Clay County Sheriff's Department Patrol Sgt. Jason Frazier told The Brazil Times Giltz was entrapped in the vehicle, but emergency responders pried one of the back doors off the vehicle to retrieve him.
Frazier added a passerby saw the wreckage and immediately called 9-1-1.
Giltz, complaining of a possible broken ankle and chest pain, was transported via TransCare to St. Vincent Clay Hospital. Frazier said Air Evac was on standby at the hospital if needed.
Other agencies responding to the accident included Clay County Search and Rescue and the Posey Township Volunteer Fire Department.
