TERRE HAUTE ¬-- The Northview Knights' softball team attempted to sour Terre Haute North's senior night with a victory Tuesday evening. However, they couldn't get the job done as they lost to the Patriots, 3-1.
Northview raced to a quick start in the top of the first, as leadoff hitter Alyssa Conrad walked, then reached second on a sacrifice bunt. She reached third when Taylor Carter hit a single.
Conrad then came home as a wild pitch went by the Patriots' catcher. The first inning ended with the Knights enjoying a 1-0 lead.
Terre Haute North responded in the second inning with some scoring of its own. Leadoff hitter Kelsey Coffey began the bottom half of the inning with a double to right field.
Lorrie LaTourette then blasted a shot to right field for a two-run homer.
Northview head coach Bethany Jones was disappointed with her team's outing. "We had plenty of innings to capitalize but we couldn't get the job done," Jones said. "We left eight on tonight. The pitch selection was not there. We're swinging at balls above our heads and letting gut shots go. When we get put in that situation, we've got to have RBIs."
North added another run in the third when Marlee Yeager walked, stole two bases, then rounded home on a passed ball.
The Knights came close to scoring in the top of the fourth as Lauren Webster hit a single to left, then advanced to second when Nicole Nelson also singled.
However, unfortunately for Northview, that would be as far as they would get as the next batter hit an easily caught fly ball.
The Knights (17-4 overall) also came close in the seventh, their last chance to score, as Nelson was able to get to second base, but no farther.
Northview's next game is Thursday at Riverton Parke. It is a varsity-only game.
