TERRE HAUTE -- The members of the Northview girls' track and field team had plenty of reason to sleep very soundly following the track and field sectional at Terre Haute North Tuesday evening.
The Knights wrung every ounce of endurance and ability out of themselves in claiming a third-place team finish and winning four events and advancing to regional in eight different events.
Not surprisingly, pre-meet favorite Terre Haute North, claimed the team title for the 10th straight season and the 28th time overall by scoring 185 points to top Terre Haute South's score of 105. The Knights' 87 team points was the most since 2007 when they also scored 2007 in a third-place finish.
Northview senior Annie Smiley and Leeanna Knight will certainly rest well following a hectic meet that saw Smiley run a total of five races scattered from beginning to end. Knigth ran four races and also jumped in both the prelims and finals during the long jump.
In the 100-meter hurdles, Smiley was the runner-up last year, but celebrated in style Tuesday evening as she raced to a personal best time of 15.97 in winning the event. The win was especially sweet after placing second as a junior.
"It's amazing, I ran my PR (personal record). I just went out there and tried to do my best, which I try to do every time, but I really tried to show it here because I wanted to advance to the regional," Northview senior Annie Smiley said following her 100-meter hurdle title. "It's bittersweet, but I'm living every minute of it because I don't want it to end."
Knight was busy as well, winning her preliminary heat in the 100-meter dash while qualifying for the finals in the long jump.
"It's pretty cool, I'm excited," Knight said after the final event of the night. "It's great to advance on to the regional as a freshman. Coming in I was seeded third (in the 100 meters) and I was a little nervous. I figured it would be a lot closer than it was. It's nice, but I'm tired."
The long jump also went to Knight as her leap of 16-3 was enough to top Riverton Parke's Sheldan Falls, who jumped 15-7 ½. Jessica Thacker also advanced as her third-place finish qualified for the regional.
Knight and Smiley also teamed in both the 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay as each qualified for the regional. The 4x100 team that featured Thacker and Natasha Barrett as well as both Smiley and Knight, won the race in 51.92 to edge Terre Haute North's squad (52.21).
The final event of the evening was the 4x400 relay as Smiley took the baton for the anchor leg and was in sixth-place as only four teams advance out of the sectional. However, she closed the gap and eventually secured fourth with a huge kick down the front stretch.
"There's no words to describe it," Northview girls' coach Ryand Tucker said after the Knights' third-place team finish. "Leeanna (Knight) coming through in the 100 dash, Annie (Smiley) in the 100 hurdles. I mean that was great, it's Annie's senior year, finally getting a win in that event. They teamed up with (Natasha) Barrett and (Jessica) Thacker in that 4x100 and won that. Leeanna won the long jump so that was three wins for her, Smiley had two and that last leg by (Smiley) in that 4x400, coming from a distant fifth to get that final spot was great, I'm all smiles."
The throwing events also went well for the Knights as Alexus Bex broke her own personal best in the discus with a throw of 99-7 to place second behind Linton freshman Michaela Hazlewood (116-3). Northview senior Kalyn Beil was fourth and will also advance in the event. She came back to qualify in the shotput with a throw of 31-3 as Hazlewood also won that event (34-7 ½).
"Track is all about those one-time performances," Tucker said. "That's what we had tonight. Next week if they perform like this, we'll have some girls in the state finals."
The Evansville Central Regional will be on Tuesday evening beginning at 5:15 p.m. Central Time.
