TERRE HAUTE -- The Northview girls' tennis team suffered a familiar sting in Friday's sectional championship as Owen Valley defeated the Knights for the second straight season to claim the title by a 4-1 score.

The victory reversed an earlier season decision that went to the Knights by a 3-2 score, but the Patriots swept the doubles play and won a pair of three-set marathons in singles to earn the championship.

The pivotal matches occurred at No. 2 doubles and at No. 2 singles as Owen Valley earned wins in match-ups that went the Knights' way during the regular season.

At No. 2 singles, Northview's Miranda Brossman scored the first set victory by a convincing 6-0 margin. However, Owen Valley's Erin Truax gathered herself and won the final two sets, 6-1, 6-2. Brossman had defeated Truax in straight sets during the first match-up this year.

In the No. 2 doubles match, Kylee Orr and Haley Leach battled to a three-set victory against the Patriots Victoria Byerly and Jocelyn McKay. However, on Friday evening, the tables turned as Owen Valley cruised past the team of Orr and Jenna Smith, 6-2, 6-0.

With the No. 1 doubles match also going to Owen Valley as Anitra Thompson and Rachel Truax won a 6-3, 6-3 match against Trisha Cox and Leach, the Knights had a bit of success in singles play.

Miranda Brossman follows through on her shot at No. 2 singles.
Senior Brianna Cook wasted little time in posting a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles against Elizabeth Coffin.

With the title already decided, the No. 1 singles match between Northview's Kaci Kehrt and Owen Valley's Madeline Sego began to take a familiar shape as well.

The duo went three sets in the first meeting and after Kehrt rallied to even the match at one-set apiece after losing in the first, the battle waged on into a third set.

"Kaci (Kehrt) and Brianna (Cook) played well. Bri came out and got a quick win for us," Northview coach Laura McCrea said. "Everybody else, Owen Valley just outplayed us. They got in our heads and played a good match.

"Kaci played hard the whole time and I thinks she's played hard all year for us," McCrea added of Kehrt. "She has nothing to be down about, she played a good match for us tonight. She showed her resilience coming back and winning that second set."

Kehrt led 2-1 early in the third set, but Sego rallied to take a 4-3 lead and held the Knights' senior off for a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 victory.

"Miranda (Brossman) and Kacie are our two seniors and they'll be missed next year. They've left big shoes to fill so our newcomers have got to come ready to play. They've been good role models for the younger girls," McCrea said.

Owen Valley advances on to the Center Grove Regional next week.
