Knights knock off top-ranked Panthers

Friday, May 20, 2011

Times Staff Report

MONTEZUMA -- The Northview softball team opened some eyes on Thursday night, squaring off with the No. 1 ranked Class A Riverton Parke Panthers and coming away with a 9-0 victory on the road.

The Knights handed the Panthers' No. 1 pitcher, Haley Chambers, her first loss of the season against 15 wins.

Northview got off to a quick start, scoring two runs in the first inning and that proved to be enough for pitcher Taylor Carter, who shut down a potent Panthers' lineup on just three hits. Carter struck out 11 batters without allowing a walk in gaining the victory.

Hope Torbert was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBI and Jessica Latourette had a 2-for-3 game with two RBI and a double as well. Ashley Hughes had two hits in five trips to the plate and scored twice, Lauren Webster was 2-for-3 with a run scored, Sarah Phillips drove in a run with a triple and Alyssa Conrad had a hit and scored three times, with two walks and a stolen base. Carter also contributed two RBI in the victory.

The Knights (18-4 overall, 6-0 WIC) travel to Boonville to play North Posey and the host school this afternoon.
