George L. Long, 88, Clay City, died unexpectedly May 25, 2011, at his home.
He was born Feb. 8, 1923, in Vigo County, the son of Harrison and Ida Beatty Long. He was raised in Clay City and graduated from Clay City High School. George served in the U.S. Army during WWII, and was a member of the VFW and American Legion Posts in Clay City.
On Sept. 8, 1947, George was united in marriage to Ruth Colenbaugh Long. She preceded him in death May 23, 2002.
Mr. Long was a member of the First United Church of Christ. He and Ruth were charter members of the White River Valley Antique Club. He and Ruth also enjoyed spending winters in Ft. Myers, Fla., where they had friends that became extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife Ruth.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law Jack and Belinda Long and Richard and Cathy Long, all of Clay City, four grandchildren Jenny Hutchison (Randy), Brad Long (Angela), Scott Long (Holli) and Greg Long(Summer), four great-grandchildren Ethan, Zach, Charlie and Jake, one sister Jean Schlegel and husband Max, Clay City, nieces, nephews and extended family.
Services will be held Saturday, at 11 a.m., at the First United Church of Christ with Rev. Julie Western officiating. Burial will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, from 5-9 p.m., at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, and again one hour prior to services at the church. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to First United Church of Christ or to the memorial of choice.
