EVANSVILLE -- Northview senior Joel Whittington emerged from the difficult Evansville Central Regional as a champion and a state finalist in two events on Thursday evening.

Whittington was just one-hundredth of a second off of his school record time in the 300 hurdles in winning the event over Northeast Dubois' Blake Schulthies. Whittington ran a 38.69 to return to the state finals in the same event he qualified for last season. Whittington also qualified in the 110-meter hurdles as he placed third with a time of 15.01. Evansville Harrison's Jamey Malvern was the event winner in 14.72.

Clay City senior Ethan Shaw also ran in both events, but missed out on the finals in the 110-meters with a time of 16.43, which placed him 14th. In the 300-meter hurdles he placed 12th in 42.39, slightly faster than his sectional time.

The Eels also competed in the 4x100 relay where they crossed the line in 46.98. Clay City's 4x400 relay squad placed 16th in 3:47.71, nine seconds faster than their sectional clocking. Northview placed ninth in the event with a 3:34.86, a remarkable 17 seconds faster than the sectional time of 3:51.35. In the 4x800 relay, the Knights and Eels finished two seconds apart as Northview finished in 12th (8:55.72) and Clay City was 13th in 8:57.72.

In field events, Northview's Dillon Reynolds capped his season by placing 11th in the high jump after clearing 6-0 as Clay City's Mark Grubbs was 12th after clearing 5-10. Northview senior Levi Pollard jumped 19-4 to place 11th in the long jump. Fellow senior, Jordan Van Horn, finished 13th in the shot put with a throw of 41-3 and was seventh in the discus with a heave of 132-11.

Terre Haute North's John Mascari, who broke a long standing sectional mark in the 3,200 meters, won the regional as well with a time of 9:12.49 to edge Terre Haute South's Taylor Head by six seconds. The 1,600-meter regional record was broken by Barr-Reeve sophomore Connor Sorrells in 4:21.84. Ironically, the record he broke belonged to current Northview boys' track and field coach, Chad Smith, who set the record in 1994 while competing for Sullivan.

The IHSAA State Finals for boys will be contested on Friday at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex at Indiana University beginning at 3 p.m.
