CLAY CITY -- The Clay City Eels advanced to play in this evening's softball sectional championship game by defeating Union, 12-1.

The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Lady Eels freshman righthander Whitney Jeffers settled down after allowing two doubles to the Lady Bulldogs' Conner Kendall and Kaitlyn Lewis in the top of the first, then never allowed another runner to reach base.

Kendall scored on Lewis' screamer over the head of Clay City centerfielder Shaya Stevenson.

"We got off to a good start then the floor fell out," Union (Dugger) (0-14) coach Rick Swan said. "We'd get two outs and then hit a wall or something."

Swan was referring to his team's inability to record the final out in all but one inning before allowing multiple runs to the Lady Eels.

Clay City broke through with four runs in the bottom first, three with two outs, and two runs in each of the next two innings before delivering the final blow in the fourth with four more tallies.

"They were hitting the ball," Swan said referring to his team only being struck out three times. "We were hitting it at people but we were hitting the ball.

"I told them come in this summer and work on some stuff. I need to get them in the weight room next year and see what happens."

Starter Ali Marcotte lasted just two plus innings before making way for senior Shayna Nicol who didn't fare much better in her swan song in a Union (Dugger) uniform.

Marcotte, the freshman, scattered four hits and five walks while allowing eight markers and Nicol walked four, allowed five hits and four runs.

The duo combined to hit three batters.

"The baby steps are killing us, we've got a lot of freshmen and a lot of sophomores in there," Swan said referring only losing two seniors -- Nicol and Aarika Street. "We have no where to go but up.

"I hate to lose those two seniors, they've been excellent players."

The Lady Eels will go after the title tonight when they take on North Central in the 7 p.m. championship game.
