An upcoming motorcycle ride will raise funds to support local veterans' and many community projects.
On June 11, the American Legion Riders (ALR) will host the annual White Knuckle Ride. The ride starts and ends at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1127, 303 S. Depot St., Brazil.
Registration is 10 a.m.-noon, with the last bike expected to return to the V.F.W. post around 5 p.m.
Riders will leave Brazil and circle through Rosedale, Rockville, Greencastle and Spencer before returning to the Brazil area.
According to ALR Director Dave Funk, who is one of the many event organizers, Jill Owen, Brazil, started the ride in 2008. Owen, who was on active duty at the time, experienced first-hand how nonprofit organizations can benefit veterans. Funds from the ride are used to support organizations that provide services to active soldiers and veterans.
"Although we have supported this ride from its inception, this is the first year it is an American Legion Riders' ride," Funk said. "It has grown too large for one person to run and we all want it to continue to grow. We are hoping this becomes a signature ride for the ALR, Brazil and local veterans."
Which is why there will be more than just a motorcycle ride going on during the fundraising event.
The American Legion Auxiliary will be serving food during the registration and the end of the ride. The public is invited to enjoy a biscuit and gravy breakfast from 10 a.m.-noon, and ham and beans later in the day from 4 p.m., until the food is gone.
"The V.F.W. will also be having an open house," Funk said. "So everyone is welcome to attend, and they are having a live band that night as well. There will be a whole day of fun."
The registration fees for the ride are $20 per rider and $30 per rider with a passenger.
Funds during this year's ride will be used to support the Indiana Veterans' Home, local veterans' organizations and projects like flowers and flags for veterans' memorials and upkeep on the local disabled veterans' van.
A portion of the funds will also be used for the annual Easter Egg Hunt organized by the American Legion.
