A Clay County child was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in a band saw accident Friday afternoon.

According to information provided by the E911 dispatchers at the Clay County Justice Center, members of Lewis Township Volunteer Fire Department and TransCare were dispatched to a medical emergency at rural residence in the Howesville area around 2:16 p.m.

Lewis Assistant Fire Chief Shawn Husband told The Brazil Times a 2-year-old boy sustained serious injuries to his right hand from grabbing hold of the chain of a moving chain-drive band saw in the garage owned by the family.

Upon arrival, emergency responders found the boy inside the home with medical care being given by family members.

"Our EMTs took over patient care and contacted dispatch for Air-Evac," Husband said. "They helped control the bleeding and prepared the child for transport."

The child was transported to Greene County Hospital, where an AirEvac helicopter was waiting to transport him to Riley Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment.

Further details are not available at this time.

Things can happen in a flash with little ones. I'm sure the family is just sick about it. Let's hope the physicians can help him.

Very sad to hear......poor little guy. Unfortunately, it only takes a second......literally.

How awful! I hope this child regains use of his hand! Poor thing! Thoughts and prayers are with the Husband family.

Why was a two year old this close to a saw?
