SPENCER -- Steamy conditions reigned at Rolling Meadows Golf Course as Terre Haute South overtook the Patriots of Terre Haute North to take the team title with a score of 290 on Monday afternoon. Terre Haute North, who won last year's title, finished second with a 299 ahead of the Linton Miners' 317.
All three teams will advance to Thursday's Washington Regional at Country Oaks Golf Course.
The Northview Knights missed out on advancing as a team for the first time since the 2006 team missed out by one stroke. Northview finished fifth as a team with a score of 347. On the brighter side however, the school will by represented individually by Larry Knight, who carded a 78 to advance along with Owen Valley's Alan Jackson (74) and Sullivan's Derek Andre (81).
"It was a little disappointing team-wise," Northview coach Scott Buell said. "We had a pretty solid practice round and we were over 20 shots worse (today) than we were in our practice round. So that was a little disappointing. Larry (Knight) had a tough front nine, but I'm really proud of him. He went back and shot one-under par on the back nine to put himself in position to move on. So it was a real good day for him."
Knight shot a 43 on the front nine holes and regrouped to shoot a 35 on the back nine despite increasing temperatures on the course.
The Knights also got an 87 from Jacob Musgrave, an 88 from Brad Smith, a 94 from Dylan Nesty and a 95 from Drew Atkinson.
The Braves were led by the co-medalist efforts of Cory and Eric Gertz, who each shot a 71 followed by Thomas Goss' 72 and a 76 from Shelby Stewart.
"It's obviously hot, but it's the same for everybody," Buell said. "Congratulations to Terre Haute South, they had an outstanding day shooting 290, that's a good score."
Clay City shot a seventh-place score of 360 led by Darius Farmer's 82. Austin Sinders and Colton Dyer each shot 44 on the front nine and finished with a 91, Rhett Bigger had a 96 and Koby Rhodes finished strong with a 42, but started with a 56 to total 98.
Knight advances to Thursday's regional on a course that the team played fairly recently.
"The regional is a long course, a tough course," Buell said of the Washington Regional course, Country Oaks. "We'll go down and play a practice round on Wednesday. We had a decent round when we went down there about a month ago at the Washington Invitational so we know what's out there. It's just a matter of going out there and putting the ball in the right spot."
