TERRE HAUTE -- Wayne Newton Post 346 should have a very potent offense this season, but it was the program's depth that carried it on Tuesday night in a 10-9 victory over Danville, Ill.

Post 346 is still without the services of several Terre Haute South players that will play on Saturday in the IHSAA Semi-state. On Tuesday however, the team was missing several West Vigo and Northview players that were attending their respective spring awards banquets.

With six Junior Legion players moving up to fill in and Northview graduate and current Olney Central Blue Knight, Caleb Mason, on hand, Post 346 improved to 4-0 this season.

Mason provided the big blast as he drilled a grand slam, went 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in five runs and Post 346 withstood a three-run, ninth inning rally by Danville as Bryan Nacke struck out two batters to end the game.

Mason started his onslaught in the first inning as he drove home Nick Long, who had drawn a leadoff walk. Dalton Sexton followed with an RBI groundout that brought home Zach Milam, who had also walked.

In the second inning, Colton Pitman blooped a single to start the frame, Long drew a two-out walk and Milam singled to load the bases for Mason. His blast soared just over the fence in left-centerfield and Post 346 looked like it was on the way to a rout.

A resilient Danville squad bounced back with three runs off Post 346 starter, John Robert Patterson, Tyler McKenzie providing a three-run homerun to close the gap to 7-3.

Danville added an unearned run in the fourth inning and a single run in the fifth, but Post 346 answered in the bottom half of the frame as Mason and Sexton drew walks and Nacke pushed a bunt that was misplayed by McKenzie, who had relieved Michael Grant on the mound. Patterson followed by grounding into a double play that drove in Mason and Pitman followed with an RBI single to increase Post 346's lead to 9-5.

Danville pushed across another run, this one off reliever Sam Wolf, in the sixth inning before Wayne Newton answered with a run of its own on an RBI sacrifice fly by Zach Milam. Mason followed with a ringing triple, but was stranded at third.

Post 346 held a 10-6 lead into the top of the ninth inning, but Danville rallied with John Cotton drawing a walk, Robert Carpenter was hit-by-pitch and Zane Dillon singled. All three would come around to score before Nacke was able to close out the victory.
