Board votes for Tucker

Thursday, June 16, 2011

Clay Community Schools Superintendent Kim Tucker
Clay Community School (CCS) board members decided in a 4-0-1 vote to hire Interim Superintendent Kimberly Tucker as the permanent superintendent.

"I am very excited about moving into the school corporation and making it my home. We've got a lot of supportive parents, a terrific group of administrators, teachers and students, a community that thrives for success and I look forward to serving," Tucker told The Brazil Times.

School board Vice President Tina Heffner chose to abstain during the vote.

"I felt we have several qualified candidates. We had one that I thought had great qualifications for the job, but this is a board decision and I wanted to vote in a way that was most beneficial to the board and school corporation," Heffner told The Brazil Times.

Board member Jennifer Kaelber did not attend the meeting.

During the meeting, board member Amy Burke Adams thanked all the applicants who sought the position.

"It was very flattering that we received so many applications. Many people wanted to come here. They wanted to be a part of our schools, work with staff and students and be a part of our community. It speaks very highly of the corporation that we had so much interest, but we know Kimberly J. Tucker will do a great job and we are really excited," Adams said.

Board President Rob Miller said he was confident with the choice the board made.

"She's done a great job. I believe she'll continue to do a great job to serve our schools," Miller said.

The board is still in the process of selecting an Assistant Superintendent.

In other school board news,

* Board members unanimously approved the Teacher Master Contract for July 1, 2011-June 30, 2013. Assistant Secretary Ron Scherb did not vote on the master contract due to a conflict of interest with his wife being a CCS teacher,

* Board members unanimously approved renewing the contracts and employment agreements for the following administrators and school officials: Director of Personnel, Data and Food Service Carolyn Kumpf, Director of Building and Grounds Tom Reberger, Director of Technology Bill Milner, Director of Transportation Frank Misner, Director of Business Affairs Mike Fowler, Coordinator of Grants and Curriculum Kathy Knust, Coordinator of LEEAP Mary Yelton, Network Specialist John Boyce and Computer Technician Jesse Jaeger,

* The board approved to grant substitute mechanic Dallas Barr two weeks vacation time. Barr is substituting for Matt Misner, who is serving the country. The school board, in agreement with USERA regulations, has to keep Misner's position available while he's serving in the armed forces.

Board members are only allowed to hire a substitute to take his place.

Since Barr is not technically a full-time employee, but has worked full-time for over a year, the board has approved his vacation request.

The board meets regularly on the second Thursday of each month. Its next meeting is scheduled to take place at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, July 14.

I wish Ms. Tucker good luck and all the best, but what is up with the board. A 4-0-1 vote on this? 2 people don't show up and one says there were better candidates? Come on...really ! Something doesn't seem right about all this.
