He was born Dec. 13, 1939, in Guthrie, Ind., the son of Stephen O. and Hannah (Grant) Wheeler. Jim attended Switz City High School.
Jim enlisted in the United States Navy and served for 26 years. He had served during the Vietnam War, and was later honorably discharged as a Petty Officer First Class. In his tenure, he served on the Enterprise on its first nuclear taskforce world cruise. Jim married Christine Chamberlain May 23, 1961.
After retiring from the United States Navy, Jim began working for Tredegar Industries as a Human Resource and Safety Supervisor. He retired from Tredegar Industries in 1996.
He was preceded in death by his parents Stephen and Hannah Wheeler.
Survivors include his wife Christine, Brazil, three sons Christopher Wheeler (Shari), Noblesville, Shawn S. Wheeler (Jodi), Brazil, and Shane K. Wheeler, Brazil, grandchildren Christopher Wheeler II, Carissa Wheeler, Shawn "Scotty" Wheeler II, Brock Wheeler, Kristin Wheeler and Alyssa Wheeler, a brother Charles Stephen Wheeler, and two sisters Carolyn Sue (Wheeler) Hill and Lettie Florence Wheeler.
Services will be at French Funeral Home Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at 1 p.m. Burial with military honors will follow at Summit Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home Tuesday, from 11 a.m., until time of services.
