TERRE HAUTE -- Wayne Newton Post 346 got a tune-up heading into the weekend's tournament at Moline, Ill. by pounding out a 15-hit barrage, including eight extra base hits to overcome some shaky defense and win 16-5 over St. Bernice Post 108 in seven innings.
St. Bernice, a team comprised of Wabash Valley athletes, including nine from Vigo County, rallied to a 3-2 lead in the top of the second inning, but Wayne Newton's bats provided a potent attack on Wednesday evening.
Post 346 got a sacrifice fly from Scott West and one by AJ Reed to take a 4-3 advantage in its half of the second frame and began to pull away with a two-run double by Kodie Girton in the third inning. Girton, a rising senior at Northview, smacked four doubles in the win, going 4-for-4, scored twice and drove home three runs for Post 346.
The Wayne Newton lead wasn't safe at 6-3 as starting pitcher Zach Kent walked three straight batters with one out in the fifth inning. St. Bernice got a bunt single from Ryan Crowther, which included a throwing error by West as two runs scampered home to close the gap to 6-5.
Wayne Newton re-established a comfortable lead in its half of the inning though, adding five runs and then got a three-run walk-off home run by Reed to invoke the 10-run rule and improve Post 346 to 18-4 overall.
Zac Niehaus was 1-for-5 with a pair of stolen bases, scored three times and drove in a run with a double and Caleb Mason added two hits in five trips to the plate and stole a base. Seth Lunsford saw time at second base and hit a two-run double.
Post 346 plays East Moline, Ill. at 11 a.m. on Friday and then Palatine at 6 p.m. to open tourney play.
