MOLINE, Ill. -- Wayne Newton Post 346 ran out of offense in semifinal action of a tourney in Moline, Ill. The squad fell behind in the first inning to Elk Grove, Ill. and couldn't get the equalizer in a 5-3 defeat on Sunday.
Elk Grove led 3-1 before Wayne Newton squeezed out another run, but Elk Grove answered back with two more runs in the fifth inning to gain the win as Post 346 falls to 22-5 overall, finishing the tourney at 4-1.
Seth Lunsford, Caleb Mason, Zac Niehaus and Daniel Marlow each had two hits. Niehaus had a double and an RBI and Lunsford provided two RBI.
Wayne Newton Post 346 stayed hot on Saturday afternoon to reach the semifinal, improving to 4-0 at the American Legion baseball tourney being held in Moline, Ill.
Post 346 knocked off St. Charles, Mo by a 12-2 score in the opening contest on Saturday and then followed that up with an 8-4 victory, capitalizing on a four-run rally in the eighth inning to defeat Northbrook, Ill.
Against St. Charles, Post 346 got things underway quickly, scoring six runs in the first inning, scoring a run in each of the five innings of a game that was halted via the 10-run rule as Jimmy Maxwell earned his first pitching win of the summer.
Caleb Mason drove in three runs while going 2-for-4 at the plate and Zac Niehaus drove home two more with a double and two hits in three at-bats. Seth Lunsford had a pair of RBIs and John Robert Patterson had a triple as part of a two hit game with three runs driven in for Post 346.
In the second game, Post 346 had a 4-1 lead through three innings, but Northbrook rallied to score three runs to tie the game against Wayne Newton pitcher, AJ Reed. Wayne Newton would wait until the eighth frame to break the tie, scoring four runs and then Reed shut the door in the bottom half of the inning to gain the win.
Reed had two doubles and an RBI at the plate and Niehaus was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI. Kodie Girton added two hits in five trips to the plate. Ricky Wheatfill had two hits and an RBI and Preston Tafaute drove home two runs.
Post 346 is back in action this evening at Crawfordsville beginning at 7 p.m.
