The Clay Youth League 12-year-old all-stars are set on defending their state championship that they won as 11-year-olds last season and on Friday night they started their title defense at the expense of Mooresville.
The CYL squad pounded out 14 runs and took advantage of some unsteady Mooresville pitching to cruise to a 14-3 victory in just 3 ½ innings as the game was halted via the 10-run rule.
The 12-year-olds started Brandon Walker on the mound, who set Mooresville down in order via strikeout to start the contest.
The CYL team drew a one-out walk from Brigham Booe and Mitchell Williams got the hit parade started with an RBI double. Alex Reinoehl followed with an RBI single and scored on an RBI groundout by Walker. Matt Clawson wrapped up a three-run inning with an infield single, but was stranded.
Austin Stevenson drew a walk and Booe brought a run home with a sharp grounder thru shortstop. Williams singled, Reinoehl walked and that set up Walker for a blast that ricocheted off the top of the rightfield wall, narrowly missing a grand slam. However, his shot still cleared the bases and he reached third base.
Leading 8-0, the CYL wasn't quite through as Clawson smacked an RBI single to centerfield, Jase Glassburn followed with a single and pinch-hitter, Luke Lancaster singled a run home to push the gap to 11-0.
Mooresville was able to scratch out a run off Stevenson, who had come in to relieve Walker after two scoreless innings. However, the CYL went on to add three more runs in the third frame.
Mooresville reliever, Caden Oliver, walked Booe and Williams to start the inning and Reinoehl hit an RBI grounder. Clawson followed with a one-out RBI groundout and Simmons pinch-hit and drove home Reinoehl with a base hit.
Facing the 10-run rule trailing 14-1, Mooresville showed some life against Luke Lancaster in the bottom of the fourth as Nolan Fines drilled a first pitch home run to leftfield. Chase Burgess followed with a single and scored following a misplayed relay throw to second and a wild pitch. However, Lancaster recovered to strike out the side to finish off the victory for the CYL squad.
Clay Youth League returns to play this evening at 6 p.m. against a second Mooresville squad.
