The following is a list of upcoming events provided to The Brazil Times:


The Clay County Sheriff's Department 2011 Clay County American Cancer Society's Relay For Life Team is sponsoring a tasty fundraiser for cooks everywhere.

The "Star Recipes" cookbook is filled with 78 pages of recipes and cooking hints provided by the staff of the sheriff's department, Clay County Justice Center and some of the inmates at the facility.

The books are currently on sale for $10, and may be purchased during normal business hours for the Clay County Justice Center. Funds raised from the sale of the cookbooks will be used to support Relay and the Clay County Food Pantry.

The Linking Education to Adults, Adolescents and Preschoolers (LEAAP) Center, 501 E. Jackson St., Brazil, is currently offering preschool screenings.

The screenings are for children who live in the Clay Community School district and will be 4-years-old by Aug. 1, 2011.

Operational Hours

The main office at Northview High School will be open Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m.-noon, from June 27-July 25.

Transcripts and work permits may be obtained during these hours.

The office will reopen for regular business hours Tuesday, July 26.

Clay County Schools has announced summer hours for its Central Office, located at 9750 N. Crawford St., Knightsville.

Through July 25, office hours are Monday-Thursday, from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. The office will be closed on Fridays.


The City of Brazil is setting up an e-mail notification system for water-related happenings, such as boil orders.

To sign up for the notification, contact the Water Office at 448-1539, or e-mail brazilwater@brazil.in.gov.

Cemetery Project

Members of the Wabash Valley Genealogy Society Cemetery Committee are currently undergoing a photography project involving valley cemeteries.

The committee is creating a database for family researchers to use free of charge. Currently, they have nearly completed taking photographs of cemetery headstones in Vigo County and are now working on cemeteries in Clay County.

Restlawn and Harmony cemeteries were recently photographed.

The committee is looking for information on any unmarked burials in the cemeteries.

Families Needed

A local non-profit exchange program is inviting local Brazil families to host international exchange students for the 2011-12 school year.

The teenage students come from more than 30 countries and will attend local high schools. The students have their own spending money and insurance. Host families are responsible for meals, a place to sleep and a nurturing environment.

The STS Foundation will have a local coordinator who will supervise the student and support the family throughout the school year.

Tutoring Offered

The Clay County Adult Literacy Program will conduct free private tutoring sessions at the Brazil Public Library for adults who wish to improve their reading skills or would like to learn to read.

Pamphlets are currently available at various locations around the city.

Those wishing to take part in the sessions are urged to return the pamphlet to the Clay County Adult Literacy Program, 204 N. Walnut St., Brazil, Ind., 47834.

Certification Classes

An ATC-certified Alcohol Server Training Class has been scheduled to take place at the Brazil Elks Lodge No. 762, Wednesday, from 7-9 p.m.

Cost for the class is $25 per person and is required by Indiana State Law that all permit holders attend and complete the course.

Permits are not valid without the certification of completion of this training course.

A Microsoft Word Level I class will be offered at the Linking Education to Adults, Adolescents and Preschoolers (LEAAP) Center, 501 E. Jackson St., Brazil, Friday.

Cost to attend the course is $139, and a textbook is included.

The class is offered through the Ivy Tech Community College Continuing Education program.

'Cruising With Kroger'

"Cruising With Kroger," classic car and truck show will take place in the Kroger parking lot, Brazil, Saturday, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

All proceeds will go to Habitat for Humanity of Clay County.

Those wishing to enter a vehicle may do so for free.

Donations will be accepted.

Food and drinks will be available.

There will be door prizes and a 50-50 drawing will take place.

Ice Cream Social Scheduled

The Dick Johnson Volunteer Fire Department will conduct an Ice Cream Social from 4-8 p.m., Saturday.

The event will take place at the Dick Johnson Community House, located on the corner of County Road 1200 North and County Road 200 West.
