VERMILLION COUNTY -- Criminal Investigation Detectives from the Indiana State Police Putnamville Post are investigating the shooting of an 11-year-old male at a southern Vermillion County residence July 18.
Chandler Strayer is listed in critical condition at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, after being airlifted by Lifeline Medical Helicopter.
A preliminary investigation found that at approximately 10:30 a.m., Monday, Vermillion County 911 dispatch received a call of a young boy shot at a rural residence on South Circle Road in southern Vermillion County.
Emergency responders arrived and found the victim was Strayer, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the head.
He was immediately taken to the Union Hospital of Clinton and later transferred to Methodist Hospital.
Strayer was at a next door neighbor's residence, 18827 South County Road 250 East, Clinton, with two other boys, ages 10 and 15, when the shooting took place. Investigators are looking into the possibility that Strayer was handling a loaded shotgun he allegedly found in the master bedroom when the firearm suddenly discharged.
