TERRE HAUTE -- The Terre Haute Police Department has received the first shipment of memorial bracelets honoring fallen officer Brent D. Long Tuesday.

However, the 2,000 bracelets sold out quickly and the department expected another 1,000 to come in Wednesday and have already placed an order for an additional 13,000.

The bracelets serve as a reminder of Brent's sacrifice for his community and as a fundraiser to purchase a memorial in honor of Brent's service to the City of Terre Haute.

All proceeds from the bracelet fundraiser will be used to purchase the memorial. The memorial will be a bronze plaque honoring Brent D. Long, and will be decorated with appropriate landscaping to enhance the immediate area surrounding the memorial.

Once designed and purchased, the memorial will be placed in the median area on the Brent D. Long Memorial Way, Brown Avenue north of Wabash Avenue, for public viewing.

The bracelets are $2 dollars each, and can be purchased at the window of the Records Division within the Terre Haute Police Department located at 12th Street and Wabash Avenue. The hours of purchase will be Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Brent D. Long Memorial T-shirts can be purchased at Springhill Wholesale, 1430 E. Springhill Drive, Terre Haute, with funds going to the Brent D. Memorial Fund.

The Terre Haute Police Department would like inform the community only three memorial funds have been endorsed by the department. The First Financial Brent D. Long Memorial Fund for the family where donations are being accepted at any First Financial location, the Terre Haute Police K-9 fund where donations are being accepted at the department for the K-9 fund, and the Brent D. Long Memorial Bracelets, where funds will be used for the bronze memorial.

Citizens are urged to use caution when donating to any other Brent D. Long fundraisers and to not give banking information over the phone or Internet.

Anyone who believes a fundraising scam is occurring should contact the Terre Haute Police Department at 812-232-1661.
