LAFAYETTE -- It may have taken a little longer than they expected, but members of the Wayne Newton Post 346 American Legion baseball team will play for the state championship.

Post 346 had to wait for Kokomo to finish its game against Crawfordsville, which was interrupted twice, once by lightning and then by rain. Kokomo eventually defeated Crawfordsville early on Monday before Post 346 defeated Kokomo 8-1 in the championship game.

The victory propels Wayne Newton Post 346 to the five-team state tourney that begins on Thursday with a game between South Bend Post 50 and Rockport Post 254. Wayne Newton will play the winner of that game at 4 p.m. CDT at Rockport.

In Monday's title game, Zac Niehaus went 3-for- 4 with a triple and an RBI for Post 346 and AJ Reed went deep along with Scott West. Zack Kent, who was the winning pitcher, had two hits with a double and held Kokomo to just five hits over six innings of work.
