Harmony Happenings

I reported last week some dates for Clay County Retired Teachers. One of those will need to be changed. We had said the Executive Session (all officers, some former officers and committee folks) would meet on Sept. 20. Andy Thomas called to say that the 20 would be an important district meeting at Covington. He would like all those people to attend the meeting.

Mary Ann Froderman will be our hostess for that executive session. I have not yet talked to her to see what new date will work best for her. I will let you know later.

The date of Oct. 25 for the Fall Social is still good.

Mark your calendars for that one. We will announce details after the Executive Committee meets.

Congrats to Nikki Osborn. She has a new job, but I don't have the details on that either.

The Worship Service at the Fairgrounds was very well attended. About 200 people met together at the pavilion. Over $900 was raised to help S.O.S.

S.O.S. is a very worthwhile organization. They help families right here in Clay County.

They buy shoes, backpacks and other items to help needy children. They also provide summer camp, tutoring and wholesome activities. They are low on funds. There have been great needs in this community. Please help if you can.

I mentioned the recycle program with Wallace Disposal and found out they have changed the pick-up part of the service. The trash trucks do not pick up recyclables with the trash. A separate truck comes by later for that. Bags can be purchased at their office near Bowen Ford on United States 40. I think bags can also be delivered but there is an additional charge. Usually, I have only a couple of small bags of trash in two weeks. The recycling really helps.

Harmony United Methodist Women met at the church Monday evening. Erie and Kathy Bell were the co-hostesses. They served fruit, cheese spread and crackers, nut bread, veggie sticks and cucumber sandwiches. It was delicious.

Harmony United Methodist Women decided to start collections for S.O.S and for supplies for Van Buren Elementary. The first drive will be Socks and Snacks for Serving on the Streets (or is it Servants on the Streets?).

Later we will collect school supplies for the Van Buren teachers. We hope to encourage everyone to buy extras at the grocery or other stores so that we can help the county children. S.O.S. is low on funds and the schoolteachers have to buy so much for their classrooms. With God's help and your assistance, we hope to help both.

All Methodist Women, of the whole West District of Indiana, are invited to a picnic at Forest Park on Saturday, Aug. 27. It starts at 10:30 a.m. Because we are from the West, it will be a cowgirl themed. Ladies and girls are asked to decorate their favorite hat for the event. Each family is asked to bring a covered dish and dessert. Games would be nice, too.

Ladies at the HUMW meeting worked on updating the scrapbook. This will be a good resource to remind us of activities and to share with other organizations. We hope to have it in good shape for the event at Forest Park.

Town and Country Men have a picnic scheduled at the same place, Forest Park, on the same day, the 27, but at 6:30 p.m. The guys can come early and just picnic the entire day. T&C guys are inviting their families, too.

It was my turn to do the lesson for HUMW. We talked about helping hungry, hurting people around the world and looked at several statistics. Women help produce half of all the food that is grown but many are hungry and starving. Millions of children go without clean water, live in substandard housing and have little or no education.

Some of this poverty is right here in our county. We need to help the world where we can but we must also remember that there are poor people right here in our area. They should be part of our mission, too.
