BLOOMINGTON -- The Northview girls' golf team got its first tournament experience of the season in the Edgewood Invitational on Thursday afternoon at Cascades Golf Course near Bloomington and came away with a fifth-place team score in the eight-team field, which was a pleasing result for new head coach Bob Treash.

"I'm really excited for them this season," Treash said of the team. "We actually had two girls, one of them actually wasn't here, our No. 3 player, we could have used her, but I'm proud of them. We had a freshman, a sophomore and a junior finish with 97's so we're pretty excited about the season."

The Knights shot a team score of 400, which included the mentioned rounds of 97 from Keirsten Mikesell and Megan Heaton.

Heaton shot a 49 on the front nine holes and a 48 on the back nine in the 90-degree weather that was cooled by a nice breeze throughout the tourney. Mikesell carded a 48 on the front and added a 49 on the back nine to complete her round.

The Knights also got a 97 from sophomore Karlie Atkinson along with a 109 from Macie Lynch and a 112 from Sierra Girton

Washington came out the overall winner with a score of 349 and was paced by the individual medalist, Blythe Woolridge, who shot an 81. Greenwood was second with a 375 and was led by Kortney Washler's score of 87. Mooresville also got an 87 from Allison McQueen on the way to a third-place team finish with fourth-place score of 381. The host Mustangs took third-place with a 381.

Most of the Knights had zero experience on the Cascades Golf Course that features plenty of trees and a wealth of rolling hills and that played a factor according to Treash.

"We started out and one girl said she was so nervous she wasn't sure she could play," Treash mentioned of opening day nerves. "I told them that, 'you play this first hole and you'll be fine.' After that they played pretty good.

"We've had one girl who has played here before and with the hills and everything like that, the greens and the sand, I'm very, very satisfied," Treash added. "We worked really hard this summer and I'm proud of them."

The Knights also got a look at a pair of conference opponents in the Mustangs, who were coming off a third-place finish at the Eagle Classic at Oak Ridge earlier in the week. Owen Valley was also at Cascades and placed eighth with a round of 500.

"I told the girls, that Washington team was the one they would have to beat most likely," Treash said of the competition. "Several of those schools have had three matches already and this is our first one, so that meant a lot too."

The Knights are back in action on Saturday in the Terre Haute Invitational that takes place at 2:30 p.m. at Hulman Links.

I'm sure proud of my granddaughter, I won't say which one. The girls done a great job. Keep it up.
