TERRE HAUTE -- Week two of the high school girls' golf season started much like the first one for Terre Haute North's Patriots as the squad shot a team score of 348 to edge out Jasper by two strokes to win the Terre Haute South Invite at Rea Park Tuesday afternoon.
Welker's round of 81 was good enough to win by one stroke over Jasper's Allison Neuhoff and the Braves' Morgan Patterson. Welker earned all-state honors last season by placing sixth in the IHSAA State Finals Tourney.
The Northview Knights continue to add invaluable experience to a young team and got a 98 from Macie Lynch on the way to a sixth-place score of 397 in the 10-team field that also included a second Northview team along with an incomplete squad from Linton.
Lynch's 98 topped the Knights, but consistency was the key for the Knights as Keirsten Mikesell and Karli Atkinson each shot a 99 followed by a 101 from Karli Atkinson and a 107 from Megan Heaton.
It was the balance of scoring, which pleased Northview coach Bob Treash in the team's second match of the season.
"It's our best score of the year, a 387, and I think only one girl has ever played here before," Treash said. "With some consistency like that, if we can putt a little better, we can maybe go down to 375 and that will be a great score for us with our young team."
With the improved score, Treash has also seen the girls' confidence improve on the golf course.
"I said something (to the team) about maybe being invited down to play at Vincennes on Aug. 20 and (the team) said, 'lets go, lets go,'" Treash said. "They are building up a lot of confidence and that's good with any sport, if you get some confidence than you are going to improve and work harder."
The Patriots led the way in team scoring, but the battle at the top was a close one with just four strokes separating third-place Vincennes Rivet (367), from Terre Haute South (369) in fourth and Washington (371) in fifth.
Next up for Northview will be a three-way match at Linton's Phil Harris Golf Course that begins at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday evening.
