The Northview girls' golf team has gotten its season underway with several tournaments, which has been an important icebreaker for a squad that has quite a few young members in 2011.

Gone is regional qualifier Hayley Miller, who graduated in the spring along with Shelby French. Both golfers were on last season's sectional team that missed out on the regional by six strokes to Greencastle. This year's team returns Macie Lynch, Karli Atkinson and Hillary Thomas, who comprised 60-percent of the postseason team.

Bob Treash takes over the head coaching position this year and has already seen his team make great strides in its three tournament appearances.

The Knights have added freshman Keirsten Mikesell to the line-up and she's already become one of the team's top performers and has slipped into the No. 1 spot during the early stages of the season. She's joined by Megan Heaton, who tied Mikesell for the top team score at the Edgewood Invite, and Sierra Girton, who has also been in the varsity lineup this season for the Knights.

Following the season opening tourney at Edgewood, held at Cascades Golf Course, Treash commented on his young team's play.

"I'm really excited for them this season," Treash said of the team. "We actually had two girls, one of them actually wasn't here, our No. 3 player, we could have used her, but I'm proud of them. We had a freshman, a sophomore and a junior finish with 97's so we're pretty excited about the season."

The Knights' placed a second team in the Terre Haute South Invite on Tuesday evening and got their whole team some experience in tournament play at Rea Park Golf Course.

Thomas, Jensen Swaim, Kenzie Magers and Hunter Todd saw action for Northview. The team should also add McKenzie Brown to the lineup soon.

For many members of the team, each visit to a golf course outside of the home course at Forest Park, is a new experience Treash said after the Edgewood tourney.

"We've had one girl who has played here before and with the hills and everything like that, the greens and the sand, I'm very, very satisfied," Treash added. "We worked really hard this summer and I'm proud of them."

Northview will get another crack at Rea Park when the Knights compete against Terre Haute South in the next match on Aug. 16 at 4:30 p.m.
