Man in hospital after accidental shooting

Monday, August 15, 2011

CORY -- A Clay County man is in the hospital following what appeared to be an accidental shooting.

At approximately 5:18 p.m., Sunday, the Clay County Sheriff's Department received word from the Vigo County Sheriff's Department in reference to a shooting that took place in the Cory area.

Dispatch with Vigo County stated family transported the gunshot victim to Regional Hospital.

Deputies from both departments arrived at Regional to speak with a female, who stated she was shooting a high-powered rifle with her husband from a short distance.

The female stated she fired one round at a steel target and a ricochet piece of metal came back and hit the male in the rib cage.

The male was transported to Regional, but was later flown to Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, for further treatment.

His condition is not known.

According to officials, a nurse from Regional Hospital stated the male's injuries were sustained on the left side of his body at the lower part of his rib cage, one his left forearm and his upper left thigh.

The case, according to officials, is still under investigation at this time, but is believed to have been an accident.

Authorities have also withheld the names of those involved.

The first rule I learned in hunter's safety was to be sure of your target and beyond. Most people get their gun safety instructions during hunter's education. There are different rules when target shooting. No one ever thinks about the bullet coming back to the shooter, but the reality is that this is not that freak of an accident.
