George W. Gardner, 68, Terre Haute, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011, in Union Hospital.

He had worked at Valley Federal Savings Bank, was a partner at Sackrider and Company and retired as a Financial Consultant from Hilliard Lyons after 17 years.

He was born Nov. 2, 1942, in Terre Haute, to George W. Gardner and Ruby C. Honnold Gardner.

Survivors include his wife Joyce Sheldon-Gardner, sons Stephen Gardner, Avon, and Jeffrey Gardner and his wife Diane, Terre Haute, daughters Melissa Sheldon-Dresser and Jamie Sheldon-Terrell and her husband Kory, all of Terre Haute, sister Penelope J. Green and her husband Kieth, grandchildren Gavin Gardner, Andrew Sheldon, Alexis Terrell, Zachary Dressler, Michael Fields, Brittany Terrell, Richard Fields and Terry Dressler, and his former wife Janet Gardner.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his mother-in-law Rosemary Butler.

A 1960 graduate of Wiley High School, George went on to earn his Bachelors in Accounting from Indiana State University, where he won The Wall Street Journal award and the Delta Sigma Pi award and was a U.S. Army Veteran.

George was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church and had been attending Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Seelyville.

Other memberships include Jaycees, past President and Treasurer of Wabash Valley Stamp Club, past Treasurer of Wabash Valley Coin Club, past Board Member of American Cancer Society, past Treasurer of Terre Haute Rotary Club, past Board member and Treasurer of Volunteer Action Center, Indiana CPA Society, American Institution of Certified Public Accountants and past Treasurer Vigo County Historical Society.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, in Callahan and Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St., Terre Haute, with Father Harold Rightor officiating.

Burial will be in Summit Lawn Cemetery, Brazil, with Military Graveside Honors conducted by V.F.W. Post No. 972.

Visitation is scheduled Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, from 4-8 p.m., and Saturday prior to services, from 2-4 p.m.
