Times Staff Report

TERRE HAUTE -- Northview's cross country teams opened up the season against a stout field of teams at the LaVern Gibson Course in Terre Haute on Saturday afternoon and also got a preview of a couple of their Western Indiana Conference opponents. And while the results were mixed as the boys team placed 15th out of the 16-team field and the girls were 12th out of 15, there were some positives to build upon this early in the season.

Sophomore Nic Yocom came home 24th a year after missing most of the cross country season with a stress fracture near his knee. Yocom led the Knights with a time of 17:25 against a field that included last year's state runner-up, Jason Crist of Franklin Central, the overall winner.

Crist won the race over Lawrence Central's Matt Dorsey by three seconds in a time of 16:07. Bloomington South's Carl Smith placed third in 16:14 to edge out Terre Haute South's Jackson Bertoli.

The Panthers of Bloomington South field a deep squad this season and lived up to their No. 7 ranking, placing seven of its runners in the top-20 and all 13 in the top-50. South won the overall title with 42 points to top No. 13 Lawrence Central (71) and No. 11 Franklin Central (81). The Braves placed fourth with a distant 148 points.

Northview found itself looking up at ninth-place Brown County and Edgewood, which finished 11th in the field, but the Knights are progressing.

Collin Richards was No. 2 for the Knights and finished 117th in 19:31 followed by Travis Beil, who was 126th in 19:44. Ian Heffner took 132nd in 19:52 followed by Josh Johnson (174th, 20:57), Ryan South (178th, 21:06), Devin McCollum (207th, 23:01), Skyler Aguilar (211th, 23:19) and Nick McCollum (226th, 25:34).

In the girls' event, third-ranked Franklin Central took six of the top-16 overall places to win the team race with 33 points over 10th-ranked Westfield (66), but it was Bloomington South and its third-place that had the unique story.

The Panthers are just two weeks removed from losing its coach as Dani Prince suddenly took the head coaching position at Western Michigan University. On Saturday, it was Panthers' athletic director/head boys' basketball coach J.R. Holmes that led the team into competition. Apparently Holmes isn't too shabby as an interim cross country coach either as sophomore Alex Warzyniak grabbed the lead after the opening mile and claimed the overall title in 19:55, winning by four seconds. Terre Haute South's Nikki Thiede placed fourth overall in 20:06.

The Knights were paced by freshman Emily Conrad (90th, 24:45) as her senior sister, Alyssa Conrad, was 101st in 25:10. Sophomore Leanna Knight took 129th followed by Allie Dupin in 131st with a time of 27:06. Hannah Zadeii (148th, 28:31, Maegan Pilman (186th, 32:48) and Taylor Simmons (195th, 36:21) rounded out the Knights' efforts.

The Knights return to the road on Tuesday for a four-way meet that includes Shakamak, Brown County and Owen Valley at 5 p.m.
