Sobriety checkpoint to begin

Wednesday, August 24, 2011

VIGO COUNTY -- The Putnamville District of the Indiana State Police will conduct a sobriety checkpoint in Vigo County during the late evening hours Thursday.

The checkpoint is in conjunction with "Operation Pull Over Blitz 68" traffic safety campaign, which runs Aug. 19-Sept. 5.

Drivers who encounter a checkpoint will be required to produce a valid driver's license and registration. Motorists that are not impaired can expect short delays of two-three minutes while passing through the checkpoint.

Impaired driving remains one of America's deadliest problems. Nationally, every 45 minutes, someone dies from a crash involving an impaired driver. Nearly one-third of Indiana's fatal crashes involved an impaired driver.

Motorists are encouraged to adhere to two basic principles when consuming alcohol: Do not drink and drive and always use a designated driver. Following these principles could save lives.
